Happy Last School Day in 2013!

Lots of great work over the last couple of weeks!

Today is the last day to work on the Music Video/Promotional video.  If you earned an A or B on your progress check video and you need more time, email me by today.

In general,  the current video can be exported on January 2nd.

If you are finished, with the current video, start writing your script for the final video.

Exercise #2 should be completed and turned in by today.

The next script is due by January 3rd, so plan accordingly.

Cimemagraph Video

WR Pride is a great opportunity to create a short film about something here at school that you really enjoy.  It could be about a favorite sport or club.  It could be about a great class or project or program here at school.  There are many choices.

Three more days!

What do you need to be completing?  Music? Editing? Exercise #2?

On Friday of this week, you can work through to the end of the hour.  Export your final, if you are done.

If you need the class time to work, export when we return on January 2nd.  If you need more time, please email me by Friday during class.  This applies to people who received an A or a B on their progress check video, are working on stop motion or have had technical issues that I am aware of.  If you have concerns, please talk to me about them!

We will be working on writing new scripts when we return on January 2nd and 3rd.

New Video options:

Documentary
Continue Stop Motion
A Cinemagraph collection (3 or more images) put together as an interesting presentation video
Rapids Pride

Exercise #3 will be due by the end of the semester as well.

Friday

Progress Check!!

Please export what you have so far for you current film.  Save it directly into the N Drive Progress Check Turn-in folder.
Once your export is done, you can keep working.

Wednesday

Let the Editing begin!

Everyone should have some or all of their footage to work with today!

Couple of people have some filming issues that they talked to me about this week.  Please send me a quick email recap of our conversation, so I can refer to it while grading the progress video due on Friday.  I would suggest creating your titles, adding music or other audio files (if appropriate) and your credits.  This is a good start until you get your footage to school and something to turn in for Friday.

Friday everyone will turn in an in-progress video.  This is to be imported like all of our other videos.  You import it directly to the N drive as you will not need a copy in your D drive.

I have added comments and grades to about half the scripts.  Please take the time to read your script comments.  The comments are meant to help you produce a better movie.  I will finish up the remaining scripts in the next couple of days.  So check back.

Monday

Filming success?  Hopefully!  You have this week and next week to work on editing your footage.  Everyone must have their footage to school by Wednesday this week.

Stop Motion filmers...remember that you have more work time if you bring in footage on a regular basis.  That means that I should be seeing you editing everyday this week and next week.

A progress check video will be due this Friday.  You will export a video of what you have completed by Friday at the beginning of class.  Once you turn in your progress video, then continue to work on editing.

Update!!!!  I saved all the ungraded Horror/Comedy/Action videos to my laptop.  Something happened and they would not play correctly.  I will try again, and get them graded this week.

Friday, December 6, 2013

Friday!

2 weeks until Music Video/Promotional/Stop Motion (stop motion may need extended time, see me as your working)

Filming for this video must be complete for class next Wednesday, December 11th.

Stop Motion may need longer.  Bring in the shots you have taken so far, and begin assembling these shots in premiere.  Each image can be adjusted in length to fit your needs.

Music Videos, Stop Motion and Promotional

We have been looking at stop motion, music videos and commercials over the last couple of weeks.  They offer fun options separately, or as we have seen in class, combined together.

We we will working on scripts this week.  The rough draft is due this Wednesday.  It must be on the document I shared with you a couple of weeks ago.  If the script is not on this document, you will only receive up to half credit for it. You will be required to have 30 to 40 3 to 5 second shots planned out for this video. Points will be deducted for longer shots that can be broken down with multiple perspective shots of a scene. Stop motion is the exception.  It will require a minimum of 90 shots (that is a 1-1/2 minute video not including any titles or credits) to be considered complete. The tone of this video can be fun, serious, creative, entertaining, inspirational.  Take charge of this piece, and make something you really relate to.

Over the next 2 weeks you will receive a grades for your class time work.  This week will focus on your script and how you prepare for your filming.  Thursday and Friday can be used to film or test film ideas, work on sound and music, finding and creating an exercise that can be used in this film or to refine your script.  Footage must be shot by next Wednesday.  That will give you 7 days to edit and complete your film.

A second exercise is due before break.  Please don't forget to get it turned in.

The Big Day!

All Horror, Action or Comedy movies are due today!

Your movie must be placed in the N drive, your script needs to be updated or maybe even shared with me, and you need to fill out an evaluation.

Monday

Good work on the scripts!  Please take the time to read my comments and make changes as needed.  I will be grading the script again when you turn in your final video.

16 class days left!  Use your time well!

Foley effects will be graded separately for this project.  Stay on top of it!

Do you have an exercise effect for your video?  I will be grading this as well.  A production logo exercise would work well, but there maybe something better just waiting for you to find it.  The 2nd exercise will be due by winter break.

Please get your equipment checked back in.

Thursday

HAppy HAlloween!
Scripts need to be fleshed out and shared with me by the end of the day tomorrow.  You must use the script document that I shared with you.  Give an overview of the story.  List music, Voice Over actors and needed Foley Effects.  If you shared your script already, I suggest looking over my comments before I grade it.

Your story must introduce the characters.  It must tell a story with a beginning, middle and an end.  It will include a special effect from your tutorials.

I graded the exercises. Quite a few people did not turn them in!  Those who did...Awesome! They looked pretty good.  Many people did not include the link for their tutorial source.  Be sure the content of your tutorials are long enough to really showcase your effect.  Let me know if you are having trouble.

Monday

-Footage for Comedy/Horror/Action should be in the editing phase by now.

-Foley, Voice Overs and Music will be receiving a large grade for this film.  It is expected that you are watching your film as you create these audio tracks, so that they are in synch with your action.

-You must use your first, or in some cases, your second exercise in this film as well.  Remember that you are selecting exercises that will add to your films in some way.  If you do not have an appropriate exercise to use, find one.

-This film is due before Thanksgiving.

Those of you that have checked out equipment... get it done and get it back.
Equipment DOs.. use it and make it count and work to get more than you may think you need...
DO NOTs.. leave it in your car, leave it outside, leave it anywhere!  it is cold.. think about it.

This week's agenda:

Scripts will be edited and looked over by this week for those that have shared their docs with me...
also.... if you haven't- you're late!
Exercise #1 should be figured out and worked on... what do you need for footage?  can it be done here?

Wednesday, October 23, 2013

Wednesday

Everyone is getting back on track!  Great work!

Exercises:
-Due on Thursday Oct 24th
-must include a title, the content and credits (including the web address)
-must be exported and saved into the N drive as a mpeg4.

I am still waiting on scripts for the new movies.  Please share them ASAP!

There are Premiere files saved into the Picture in Picture folder.  I cannot grade or even view these files.  I do not have the video files (you do) to view these movies.  You must export the exercise or I cannot grade it.  I will be throwing these files away at the end of the week.  Please remove them immediately, if you need them.

Next Wednesday is a presentation by the Art Institutes.  We will be attend this as a class.

CopyRighT and Fair Use
We are learning about copyright and fair use... and ways to work with it but also the realization of how to simply avoid it in our work.

Plagiarism
is theft of another person's writings or ideas

Stealing is wrong.

A video....  because it makes the point.

It deals with video a bit more and uploading online... but we associate it with digital work since that is WHAT WE DO.

Wednesday, October 16, 2013

Wednesday

We need to get equipment gathered together.  We are missing 1 cords for uploading video from the camera to the computer.  We are missing one of the microphones.  If you borrowed this equipment, please let me know or get it returned.  Thank you!!

Remember to share your scripts with me for you new video.

We will be having a movie day on Friday.  If you would like to bring along a snack, that would be fine.

One last thing...is anyone familiar with iCloud5?  Someone looking for help with it.  Let me know if you can help out.

Thursday, October 10, 2013

We are really ready to move on!

Themes or more specifically GENRES will help you decide the content of your next movie.

Genres in general...

genre

genre is a specific type of music, film, or writing. Your favorite literary genre might be science fiction, and your favorite film genre might be horror flicks about cheerleaders. Go figure.
In music, genre refers to musical style such as jazz, salsa or rock. In film or literature, the genre is determined by the subject, setting or plot of the story. When you are wandering around a book store, books are usually arranged by genre. Many genres, such as "mystery" or "fantasy," overlap in film and literature, while others, such as "romantic comedy" in film or "historical fiction" in books, are specific to one or the other.

Our choices...

Action (Disaster): Stories whose central struggle plays out mainly through a clash of physical forces.

Horror

Horror: Stories whose central struggle focuses on escaping from and eventually defeating a Monster (either human or non-human).

Comedy

Comedy: Stories whose central struggle causes hilarious results.

Thursday

I've gotten a good start on grading the videos and scripts.  If your video and documents are still missing, get them turned in immediately!

After Effect tutorials...please take a break from them.  I cannot trouble shoot until I get After Effects on my laptop.  That may not be until late next week.  In the meantime, you could work on a Premiere Pro tutorial instead.  If you finished an After Effect tutorial, you can still turn it in to the tutorial #1folder.  The first tutorial should be completed by Fall Break (October 24).

Footage for your second video should be ready to use by Monday.  Write and share your scripts first or it is like writing the final draft of an English paper first and the rough draft later.

If you still have a camera or equipment checked out, finish up and return it quickly.

Thank you!

Tuesday

Thank you to those who sent me scripts today.  I need one more day to rest, and I will get back to grading the documents you have for me.  I will collect the missing Walking evaluations on Wednesday.

Let's work hard on staying on top of the assignments.

Filming outside of class will need to wait until Wednesday.  The tutorial footage can easily be done in class.

Monday, October 7, 2013

Monday

We will be working in class today.  The office can be opened unless people are not working.  Most of you have computer work to complete and should not be in the office for more than headphones!  No Loitering Please

I graded this weekend.  I suggest looking at your grades and getting things turned in.  Many people did not turn in their evaluations, so I could not grade your videos.  Please get this done today.  Extra evaluations can be gotten from the teacher.

If you are exporting today, please make sure that you have adjust the footage to match the frame size.  Render everything! If you need help, ask your classmates.  About half the class successfully exported their videos and turned them in.

Many people still need to share their script for Walking with me as well.

If you are caught up in the grade book, you rock!  Keep working on the list from Friday's blog post.

Everyone has plenty to do.

Friday, October 4, 2013

Friday

We are ending the 5th week of school.  I am grading the Walking Videos, scripts and evaluations this weekend.  Everyone needs to be exporting and turning in your work before progress reports are printed for your parents.

If you are done with your Walking video, these are the things you should be doing during class:

-Horror/Action/Comedy script-this should be written before you film or it is like writing a rough draft of a paper after you write the final.  Remember to share this with me.
-Create a production company logo (this could be your first exercise) to use in you films
-Filming shots for new video
-Finding music or sound effects
-Creating foley effects
-Exercises  (3 or more)
-this is what I expect you to do if you are not productively filming, working on sound or editing
-if you are not working, I will be starting to give work progress grades as needed
-these are short "film shorts" that give you more experience working with Premiere and After Effects
-take you time and listen.  If you do not understand something, google for an answer.  You'll get.

Tuesday

Great day to finish up your Foley effects.  All the microphones have been checked, and the nonfunctional one have been removed.  Everyone should be good to go for recording.  If you cannot hear what you are recording through headphones, see me.  There is a menu adjustment for that.

People who used school cameras...remember to see me before you use Image Mixer!
People who used their own cameras...you do not need Image Mixer!

If you are ready to export your video, check the tab above.  The details are there.

Thursday, September 26, 2013

Push day!

It is time to start wrapping up your Walking video.  It must include the following items:

Title
2 minutes of Edited Video (use some fades)
Use of picture in picture and color correction.
Music
Foley Effects
Room Tone
Credits

Write up and share the script through Google Docs. Be sure I can edit to provide feedback.

Start planning the script for Comedy/Horror/Action...this is a great opportunity to film over the 3 day weekend.  You choose your actors, your location and the subject matter.  Keep it appropriate.  Remember the contract that you agreed to.

Exercise Tutorials...mini videos that explore a special effect of your choice.  It should not be a tutorial I am asking you to use for one of the main class videos such as picture in picture.  You are all ready expected to do this, so find something else.  If you need a shot of fire for your tutorial, then use your time this weekend to capture the type of shot required.  Not everything is online.  Think creatively.  I will help you with some key search words.

-premiere pro tutorial effects
-After Effects  (give it a try!)

We will go over exporting your video and there is a review tutorial to help you out if you do this next week.

This is a bit at first but it will become second nature as we continue to create... and we will review this A LOT...

DO NOT OVERLOOK the step to uploading video into the D-drive!!!  I will make you do it over if you forget and have it going elsewhere!

Lets set Both to the D- Drive and make sure you save your video to the correct folder also.

Keep working on your personal script.  It will help you figure out what shots you need to gather during our filming sessions.
